Molasses Cookies

I first posted this cookie recipe almost exactly three years ago! While there is nothing magical about baking theses cookies in the fall, it has become a sort of tradition for us. I don’t use regular molasses in these cookies – I use sorghum syrup. And we just happen to know some people who make sorghum syrup. And that always happens in the fall! So, every time we get a fresh batch of sorghum syrup, you guessed it, I bake these cookies!

Stay or Go Burritos

The fall tends to be a busy time for farmers. It’s harvest season! This means lots of long days, complete with very early mornings and very late nights. No matter when harvest starts, it always seems as if farmers are in a race against the weather to get the crops in and stored before it gets too cold or too wet.

Lucky for me, Farmer Doc and I don’t raise crops. We raise cattle, and run a veterinary practice. So this time of year isn’t quite so busy for us. But, we do get hit in the spring and summer when it’s time to work the cattle (vaccines, deworming, artificially inseminating, checking for pregnancy, and later working the calves) and harvest and bale the hay all at the same time!

Garden Veggie Stew

I was recently asked to cook a recipe that somehow relates to my connection with farming and agriculture. My first thought was, “This is easy! We raise beef cows, and I cook with beef all the time!” And then I thought to myself, “Self, you also have all that yummy produce from your garden this summer – why not experiment with it a bit?”

And that’s exactly what I did. I call it Garden Veggie Stew. Farmer Doc has been calling it Feutz Farm Stew. Make it your own, and call it whatever you want!

June is Dairy Month

And I love some dairy!

Farmer Doc and I are serious homemade ice cream makers. We make ice cream for every big event through the summer and fall. And for some not-so-big events. We are “famous” for our blackberry ice cream, but love to experiment with different flavors. Two years ago we perfected our pumpkin pie ice cream. Last year our cookies and cream was a big hit.


But all we have is a 6-quart ice cream maker. Which means that when we make ice cream, we really make ice cream. So we better have lots of friends around to help us eat it! And our standard ice cream recipe uses raw eggs. I usually don’t mind that, but I really shouldn’t eat raw eggs while I’m pregnant. So we needed to look for new ice cream recipes this year.

Are you ready for some… baseball?

Right, okay, that’s the football promo. I will admit, I am not a huge baseball fan. I’m actually a hockey girl, and baseball just doesn’t move fast enough for me. But this is a great excuse to get together and hang out with some family and friends!

 

My friends at Indiana’s Family of Farmers are hosting Family Night at the Ballpark on Tuesday, July 19th at the Indianapolis Indians baseball game, and they are working with some Indiana bloggers to help give away tickets!!

 

Winners will receive up to 8 tickets to the game for their family and friends to come hang out with IFOF at the Indians game on July 19th (game starts at 7:00pm). The winners will also get a wristband to join IFOF in the picnic area for an invite-only picnic with a choice of hot dog, hamburger, or pulled chicken barbecue. There will also be a selection of salads, cookies, and drinks.
