Molasses Cookies

I first posted this cookie recipe almost exactly three years ago! While there is nothing magical about baking theses cookies in the fall, it has become a sort of tradition for us. I don’t use regular molasses in these cookies – I use sorghum syrup. And we just happen to know some people who make sorghum syrup. And that always happens in the fall! So, every time we get a fresh batch of sorghum syrup, you guessed it, I bake these cookies!

Peppermint Snow Ball Cookies

I picked these cookies out of Gooseberry Patch’s “Garfield… Recipes with Cattitude!” cookbook because they remind me a lot of the butterball cookies that my mom always made at Christmas. (I’m not really sure why we decided those are Christmas cookies. These are more Christmas-y with the peppermint addition. But I guess it means there’s not always powdered sugar- and butter-filled cookies sitting around the house. Which is good. Most of the time.)

Homemade cookies and cream ice cream

This is the time of year that we break out the homemade ice cream maker. We’re really good at vanilla and blackberry, and last year I perfected my pumpkin pie recipe. But we were looking for something new this year. So, for the first time (for us), homemade cookies and cream ice cream!



Of course, featuring Oreo cookies.

Not as good as homemade

But, what is?

Cheesecake Factory cheesecake comes to mind… And Dairy Queen ice cream cakes, but who makes those at home anyway? (No, really, tell me who – I want to know how!) Stouffer’s frozen mac & cheese is pretty darn good…

But that’s not the point!

The point is that these are definitely NOT as good as homemade. My friend Justin used to make no-bake cookies for me and Dani in college. They were addictive. Seriously.

I saw these at Walmart yesterday, and in a rare moment of weakness, I bought a box.

Wait, does that label say use by 6/19?

Justin’s cookies would never last for 13 days.

Never.

These look the same…

Pretty chocolatey color, lots of rolled oats, yummy peanut butter smell…

But they are not the same. Nowhere near as good. A little dry, and not as much peanut buttery goodness as I want.

Don’t get me wrong. I’ll eat them.

I ate four before I managed to take pictures.But I’ll complain the whole time.

Sorghum Cookies

As promised, here’s something to do with that sorghum!

I have been told that not all sorghum cookie recipes are the same.  I have also been told that this recipe is, hands down, the absolute best you will find anywhere. (And, for your viewing pleasure, check out this recipe redo post with better photos!)

I made a double batch of cookies over the weekend.  The recipe card at the bottom is for a single batch. 

Very simple ingredients.  All I had to go out and buy was ground ginger.  (And, frankly, I should have had some of that anyway.)
